As it has been mentioned previously, the ‘tungnath temple’ is one of the key attractions of the trek. The name means Lord of the peaks and it is supposedly one of the Panch Kedar temples too, according to legends. According to Hindu mythology, Vyas Rishi came to know that the Pandavas had slayed the Kauravas, their own blood and told them only Lord Shiva can relieve them from their guilt. The Pandavas went on a search to find Lord Shiva, who, in order to avoid the Pandavas, had taken the shape of a bull. Afterwards at five different locations, five different body parts of the Lord were found and temples had been built at these five locations. In Panch Kedar, the Tungnath temple is considered the holiest one and is most respected or worshipped. Thus this trek has a religious touch to it too.
Standing at an unbelievable height of 12000 feet, the Tungnath temple is the highest Shiva temple. The temple sits quietly on a large and clear land.
